Replace the word with ‘him’ and see if it makes sense. If it does, use whom. So, “for him, spelling is not important” makes sense grammatically, so use whom. Or, “it is for him” is why you ask “Whom is it for?” or more dryly, “For whom is it?” That’s what I was taught anyway.
